Don't be surprised about fresh Mourning Cloaks. They're migrating now, so it
helps to be at their best. I saw a number of them on the move yesterday
along the Long Island beaches. I'm not sure whether these emerged recently
or emerged in early summer and aestivated.

Subject: [Ctleps-l] Monarchs in Milford, CT

Yesterday while doing a birding event called the Big Sit, myself and some
dear friends stayed within a 17 foot circle on the western end of Miford
Point from 4:30AM to 7:15PM. This is basically a large vegetated sandbar on
the eastern side of the mouth of the Housatonic River. We tallied just over
50 migrating Monarchs. The majority looked in great shape and only a few
were heavily worn. None appeared tagged. We also had over 25 Cabbage Whites,
one Orange Sulphur and were greatly surprised by a fresh Mourning Cloak. At
this location on 10/14/12, also doing a Big Sit, I observed a Little Yellow.
This Big Sit event is a fundraiser for CT Audubon's Coastal Center.

PS: we smashed our previous Big Sit record holding species total of birds
for the State.
