[Ctleps-l] American Lady - Stratford - 4/12

In checking my photo records, I see a number of different years in which I got American Lady in mid-April, starting at April 13. Most of these are from Hook Mountain in Rockland co. NY. They hilltop at the summit on warm enough afternoons, so there might be something more than randomness to it. I go to that site for the Broad-winged Hawk migration. Since that doesn’t really get going until mid-April, that is the earliest I go there. I do get the feeling that that the butterflies (Red Admiral and Painted Lady, as well) could be possible a few days earlier.

I then checked records published by the New York City Butterfly Club way back when. I found that I reported an American Lady at Sandy Hook, NJ on April 6, 1991, and someone else had a few at Jamaica Bay, NY on April 8. So it certainly seems plausible for April 12 in CT. Hey, we had spring earlier this year.

4/12, Stratford, Long Beach Blvd., McKinney NWR railroad trail - AMERICAN LADY , my first of year. It seemed VERY early for this species in CT. Is that the case?
