[Ctleps-l] New York of Note

I try not to interject too much from my home base of New York, but I have a
few notes from recent days that may be of regional interest. I'll go in
chronological order.

April 16, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge - Question Mark. This was a worn
overwintering individual (orange hindwings). At least going by my photo
records, it's only the second one I've seen (April 8, 2012). Fresh migrants
start to arrive in mid-May - normally when I get my first of the year. Also,
a nice showing of Grapevine Epimenis.

April 17, Jones Beach State Park - Checkered White. My first spring
individual in the north. I can't say that I was surprised. I had heard of
one being seen at that location on March 16 - even saw the picture to prove
it. It would seem that some overwintered (not in the adult stage). If there
is a CT site that had a bunch last summer-fall (Stratford Point, if I recall
correctly), I would say to pay attention to white butterflies. Also, in
other habitats, Eastern Tailed Blue, Eastern Pine Elfin, Juvenal's
Duskywing, Northerz Azure.

April 19, Hook Mountain State Park, at the summit - 2 Painted Ladies and at
least 5 Gray Hairstreaks. A nice showing of Falcate Orangetips, as well,
along with some Black and Tiger Swallowtails. And actually enough hawks to
keep me looking up.
