Based on Google Maps, I believe one was as close as 350 feet to CT, and all three within a mile. A passing dog walker thought the spot was still in CT, but I'm not so sure. This is more or less a state record for CT anyway - it's now only a matter of time before they are confirmed here since the beech forest continues over the border. Photos to follow once I sort through and upload them. Also of note - two White M Hairstreaks - one in CT, one in MA. I've long thought that E. laeta was in CT, and it was on my mind when I checked this location. Although its usual range in the area is in NW MA, primarily around Mt Greylock, the key is mature American beech. The larvae feed only on beech nuts which only occur on 40+ year old trees. Widespread logging was particularly devastating to this species since it could could not survive on young growth. As a result, it was pushed back to areas of high elevation that could not be logged as easily (i.e. Mt Greylock). Now that the forests have matured, it may be spreading south and east. In fact, there is a lot of suitable habitat in NW CT, and it's almost surely much more widespread in SW MA than currently known.
