All: Some of you may already be aware of the following information.  I posted the below email to several groups and am forwarding here a few days late.  However, see the list down below.Just thought I'd post this FYI.  Amajor genomic study of 250 species of Skippers in several subfamilies hasresulted in a considerable number of name changes in several groups ofSkippers.  New tribes, subtribes, genera and subgenera have been describedand a considerable number of species (most in Central and South America) havebeen moved from their traditional placement to another.  Some subspecieshave been elevated to species status and some "synonyms" have beenelevated to species.  The citation is:

Li, W., Cong, Q., Shen, J., Zhang, J.,Hallwachs, W., Jansen, D. H., and Grishin, N. V.  2019.  Genomes ofskipper butterflies reveal extensive convergence of wing patterns. Proceedings of the National Academy of Science 116(3): 6232-6237.

While only 6 pages in length, the paper is asummary of what is outlined in a 120 page S1 Appendix linked from the paperthat outlines the taxonomic changes very clearly.  This is a majormolecular study and is only the tip of the iceberg.  Expect more such studiesto overhaul our knowledge of the rest of the skippers and ultimately allbutterfly groups.  Many will, no doubt, ignore or reject this work infavor of traditional or prescribed arrangements, but those of you must realizethat we’ve had it wrong all along!

The following changes are extracted from thepaper and pertain only to species in North America north of Mexico and affectthe Pelham Catalogue (ButterfliesofAmerica.com). This is the complete list, and everything changed for species south of the border has been omitted here.  The old names (on left) arelisted in Pelham 2008 and show their placement number in the Catalogue [inbrackets].  The new names are on theright and underlined.  Common names arefrom NABA but NABA scientific names are, unfortunately, outdated for manyspecies groups and of limited utility for this discussion.  The reason thisis being posted here is because many changes have occurred in butterflytaxonomy over the past several years and the below changes are considerable, and will eventually find their way into upcoming books.
