Developers' Forum+ Folks:

We had an interesting and informative meeting on September 16th - remember
that we will focus our discussions for the next few months on OAI/PMH.

Attending: Art Bellanger, Gretchen Gano, Jeff Barnett, Abe Parrish, Scott
Matheson,
George Ouellette, Martha Smalley, Richard Borusey, Audrey Novak, Joan
Swanekamp, Karen Reardon.

We had a brief update of projects in process.
Audrey reported that her group has begun taking initial steps to enable the
Finding Aids
for harvesting. The best source of that data has been determined to be
Orbis, work will continue this fall on this project.

Art Bellanger reported he has installed the OAI component of Greenstone. He
is working to configure it for his database. He has also successfully OAI
enabled the Yale Medical
Thesis Digital Library - based on software from Virginia Tech. (URL below)

Karen reported there should be an OAI component available for Insight in
October (Insight 5.5) – we will test if it is a standalone module soon -
later if it requires an upgrade.

A discussion of issues that should be addressed by the group raised the
issues of metadata, best practices and tested tools.

The Yale Descriptive Metadata Element Set and Guidelines
(
<http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/metadata/YESguidelinesVersion0-5-July2005.doc>http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/metadata/YESguidelinesVersion0-5-July2005.doc
)
is a document from the IAC Metadata group that outlines minimal required
elements for
Library digital collections.

The article “Bitter Harvest: Problems & Suggested Solutions for
OAI-PMH Data & Service Providers”
by Roy Tennant, California Digital Library:
http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/harvesting/bitter_harvest.html
gives a good overview of issues collection builders should keep in mind.

Next steps:
-Everyone should read the Roy Tennant article and also become familiar with
the Yale Element Set.
-Anyone who has enabled a collection that 'passes' validation should send
the URL to Audrey Novak for testing with Metalib.

Art supplied this URL:
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library (YMTDL):
http://ymtdl.med.yale.edu/cgi-bin/NDLTD-OAI2/oai.pl

A Validation site:
http://re.cs.uct.ac.za/

-Folks interested in the process of validation (and the types of error
messages generated),
should put Art's URL into the validation site.

Next meeting:
Art will give a brief presentation on his work.
Brian will give an overview of the tools used to prototype enabling the
Beinecke DL.

Audrey will give a demo of the Metalib Metaindexer product at a future meeting.

Other ideas for agenda topics - please send them to me. Thanks!

If I have anything incorrect in these notes - please let me know.
Next meeting is October 21st at 3:00 - right before the 75th Anniversary party.

-kmr
