Modernizing: Political, Social, and Cultural Change in Greece after 1974: A speaker series based on the films of Nikos Perakis.

Stathis Kalyvas,
Professor of Political Science, Yale University

"A Time of Hope and Stagnation: Greece in the Late 1980s"

Followed by the screening of "Living Dangerously" (1987), directed by Nicos Perakis

'Vios' is Greek for life in general or a person's life in particular. 'Politia' means the state and the citizen's relation to it, that is both 'constitution" and "public behavior". The expression "Vios ke Politia" (life and state) describes an adventurous person who has had his ups and downs and is still living dangerously. One fine morning on the day of the World Cup Final in which the Greek national team is to play, Karamanos, an employee of the Greek Telecommunications Organization connects the personal computer of the head of the organization to a complex explosive device. He threatens to blow up the building unless he is allowed to appear on television ten minutes before the soccer match is broadcast in order to denounce everything awry in Greek life which engulfs Greek citizens and makes them "victims" of the state. In their efforts to foil his plans, the authorities round up all his old army buddies looking for incriminating evidence that they too were members of the t
errorist organization C.S. (Constitutional Struggle) a member of which Karamanos professes to be. Through a series of comical events, everything comes under satirical fire, state organizations, television, the police, the reactions of the citizens... revealing the current social crisis and the clash of ideologies.

Tuesday, December 1, 4:30 PM

Luce Hall Auditorium, 34 Hillhouse Avenue, New Haven

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

The series is funded by the The Edward J. and Dorothy Clarke Kempf Fund. The activities of the Hellenic Studies Program are funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Hellenic Studies at Yale University
