Directed by the Greek Cypriot Michael Cacoyannis and written by Cacoyannis and Iakovos Kabanellis. Mercouri’s portrayal earned her the Cannes Best Actress award and an Oscar nomination, while Manos Hadjidakis was awarded an Oscar for the theme song he composed for this film.<FONT class="Apple-style-span" size="6"><SPAN class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 24px;"></SPAN></FONT></DIV><DIV style="text-indent: -24px;"><BR class="khtml-block-placeholder"></DIV><DIV style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; "><B><I><SPAN class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">        </SPAN>Phaedra</I></B> (1962): In this modern adaptation of Euripides’ Hippolytus, Mercouri plays Phaedra, the second wife of the shipping tycoon Thanos (Ralf Vallone), who falls in a doomed love with her husband’s son from his first wife, Alexis (Anthony Perkins).
