Looking for a different location for your semester or year abroad?
Then check out our new "Spotlight on ..." series beginning with this
week's Study Abroad E-News. Each week we'll take a lesser-known
program and tell you a bit about the city and program. Break away
from the "obvious" Yale student destinations and consider somewhere unique!

Spotlight on Stockholm
According to Lonely Planet online, "Stockholm is, without doubt, one
of the most beautiful national capitals in the world." It is a
cosmopolitan city of about 1 million inhabitants, spread over 14
islands, with a climate not dissimilar to that of Boston. While
Swedish is the official language, English is widely spoken. Sweden
is the home of IKEA, Saab, Orrefors crystal, Ingmar Bergman, Swedish
meatballs with lingonberries, mystery writer Henning Mankell, The
Cardigans ... and let's not forget ABBA!

The Swedish Program, located on the campus of Stockholm University,
is beginning its 20th year providing U.S. students the opportunity to
study abroad in English in the beautiful city of Stockholm. The
program offers an interesting selection of courses, and opportunities
to meet Swedes through participation in student groups and sports at
the university, as well as through the host family housing option.

Some of the courses offered may include -- Islamic Women in Western
Societies (new for spring 2007), Women, Swedish Society & Culture,
Environmental Policy: Natural Resources & Society, Europe & the
World Economy, Swedish & European Cinema, Politics & Nationalism in
Eastern Europe, Scandinavian Literature, and many others. Check out
the web site at http://www.swedishprogram.org/course.html.

Of his semester on The Swedish Program, Arthur Wojtowicz '06 said ...
"The Swedish program is a great opportunity for people with an
interest in economics, political science, and women's studies to get
an amazing perspective on an amazing country .... Had a great
relationship with one of my professors, had time to do an independent
study, and just appreciated having a great lifestyle in a beautiful
city ... Everyone I was with [on the program] loved it, misses
Sweden, and had the best time of their college career."
