"Yalies in China and Chinese in Yale:

The Nineteenth-Century Story of Yale's China Encounters"

BEATRICE BARTLETT
Professor Emeritus of History, Yale University

FRIDAY, MAY 4, 2007

4:00 PM, Room 202, Henry R. Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Avenue

Please join us for a special presentation examining the three
principal contacts between Yale and China in the nineteenth century:
(1) Yale-educated missionaries, (2) Yung Wing, the first Chinese to
graduate from any American college, and (3) the Chinese Educational
Mission of 1872-1887 which brought about 25 Chinese to study at
Yale. Slides will provide pictures and maps of early Yale history
and of the key figures involved in this tale.
