New International Travel Policy for Undergraduates

The University Officers have approved the "Yale University
International Travel Policy for Yale College Students" to replace a
policy that had been instituted in 2003.

The former policy's list of 75 countries to which undergraduates
could not travel using Yale funds or to receive Yale credit is
replaced with a simpler and more transparent system for determining
where restrictions apply. Yale College students will be restricted
from traveling to a smaller number of countries for which:

1) the U.S. State Department has issued a warning that orders
departure of U.S. dependents and non-emergency personnel; recommends
that U.S. citizens depart the country; advises U.S. citizens against
all travel to the country; or recommends that U.S. citizens defer
non-essential travel to the country, or

2) the travel assistance organization MEDEX has rated the country a
"5" (very high) level threat.

Financial support and credit cannot be awarded for activities in the
countries listed in either category. If a country or region meets
one of the above criteria the restriction applies without exception.

The process:
1. Undergraduates who plan to pursue study, research or internships
abroad can find the policy and process on the Yale and the World site:

2. State Department warnings and Medex country threat ratings can be
accessed through the Medex site, under the tab "Travel and Security Info"

To register for a new account, you enter your Yale login and password
as your user name and password. A benefit of this process is that it
requires you to take the time to inform yourself about your
destination, and will also create for you an account within the Medex
system, which will allow you access to support and assistance when
abroad should you need it.

3. All students seeking credit or funding for activities abroad must
complete a release form
<http://world.yale.edu/travel/TravelYaleColRelease.doc>http://world.yale.edu/travel/TravelYaleColRelease.doc
on which you specify that you have checked the State Department and
Medex sites. These forms are held by the office that is providing
sponsorship for your activity abroad (in the case of Year or Term
Abroad, this is IEFP).

4. So that we can reach you in an emergency, you must also register
your travel with Yale at
<http://world.yale.edu/travelform/index.asp>http://world.yale.edu/travelform/index.asp

Any questions about policy or process can be addressed to Katie Bell
(<mailto:kathryn.bell at yale.edu>kathryn.bell at yale.edu) or to Associate
Dean Jane Edwards (<mailto:jane.edwards at yale.edu>jane.edwards at yale.edu).
