Bates College is a highly-selective private liberal arts College located
in central Maine.  Supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities
and private gifts, the Colleges new Asian Studies program now offers an
interdisciplinary major in East Asian studies.  

The College invites applications and nominations for a new tenure-track
position in both Japanese culture and language.  The successful candidate
may have primary qualifications as a teacher of Japanese culture with
complementary qualifications teaching Japanese language at the
introductory or advanced level, or the candidate may have primary
expertise in the language classroom with interests and skills as a teacher
of culture.  The College is especially interested in receiving
applications from scholars with expertise in the visual arts  for
instance, art history, film, architecture  while remaining open to
applications from candidates with competence in a range of cultural
expressions from baseball to revolutionary politics.  The candidate must
possess native or near-native fluency in Japanese language and have the
Ph.D or be close to completing it.  

Appointment will be made at the Assistant Professor level in the
department of German, Russian, and East Asian Languages and Literatures
and the Asian Studies program.  The closing date for applications is
January 31, 1998.
