"Deep River" Comments

hello everyone
i will be giving a brief, informal talk on the movie "Deep River" by director kei
kamai (1995)  this weekend to a local cultural arts center, and i wanted to know
if anyone had any sources of information and/or antecdotes on how the film was received
in either japan or elsewhere.

i  do know that it won the montreal world film prize, but what was the?@"popular"
reception? i would greatly appreciate any information on how to briefly contextualize
the film.
