I will have to look at the Utamaro divers scene again.  It did not strike
me as a Hollywood reference.  Use of Hollywood "diction" does not necessarily
mean a reference to Hollywood.  Japanese directors tended to "deconstruct" and
use specific codes to their own purposes.  Mizoguchi's style has much more to
do with the Shimpa stage than with anything else.  Did Yoda have anything
to say on the topic?
