Sachio Sakai, the actor who played the role that was essentially
replaced by Raymond Burr for the Americanized "Godzilla, King of the
Monsters!" died Saturday in Japan. He was 69. 

Sakai, a longtime favorite of director Ishiro Honda, also appeared in
"Half Human" (1955), "King Kong vs. Godzilla" (1962), "Gorath" (1962),
"King Kong Escapes" (1967), "Godzilla's Revenge" (as the lead bank
robber, 1969), "Yog--Monster from Space" (1970), and "The Vampire
Doll" (1970). 

Sakai last worked with Honda on Akira Kurosawa's film "Rhapsody in
August" (1991).

He will be missed.
