Here is a website worth a look. It's called Film-Philosophy: Electronic
Salon (http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/film-philosophy/files/). Note the
section "Online Writings." They are collecting review articles of varying
lengths. This might be something we could consider in Kinema Club.

There is an article on the benshi, for anyone interested in Japanese silent
film and how it's being written about (Tosh Berman, "The Benshi Tradition:
Cinema
Performance"-----http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/film-philosophy/files/paper
..berman). The approach does not take into account the way the benshi is now
being conceptualized, especially in Aaron's work. Thus, the benshi comes
off as a "Brechtian poet." But I did enjoy his unusual description of
Sawato Midori: "She is like Charlie Parker, in that she abducts a melody
(film) and expands the medium onto another sphere."

There is another article about Japanese film in their list, but the link
isn't up so the article must be "forthcoming." It's Paul Belbutowski,
'Hara-Kiri' and the Aftermath of Peace in 17th Century Japan.
