As many list members no doubt know, Oshima had a stroke in February 1996,
shortly after Shochiku announced the production of his latest feature, the
period drama Gohatto, for its 1996 lineup. Early in January Oshima told
Shochiku VP Okuyama Kazuyoshi that he was well enough to make the film and,
on January 15, Shochiku said that Gohatto was back in its lineup for 1998.
Following the Shochiku coup, however, the company has been reevaluating
its lineup, though I would hope that, after all this tsuris, production on
Gohatto will go ahead as scheduled. If I hear anything, I'll let you know.
Another bit of news that might be of interest to list members: Shochiku has
commissioned Wayne Wang to direct the remake of Shiawase no Kiroi Hankachi,
the 1977 Yamada Yoji hit. Orginally, Okuyama Jr. wanted Kevin Costner to
star, but dropped the idea when he found out that Costner's salary would be
more than the film's entire budget.
