SYMPOSIUM ANNOUNCEMENT
Reading, Empire, Mass Subjectivity in Modern Japan
To celebrate the acquisition by Cornell University's Kroch Library of the
private library of the late Maeda Ai, the East Asia Program, Society for
the Humanities, and Comparative Literature Departments will sponsor a
small symposium, "Empire of Readers," exploring relationships between
technologies of representation, imagined communities, and the politics
of public, virtual, and transnational space. The symposium will be held
from November 6-8, 1998, on the Cornell campus. A schedule will be made
available in late August. The conference is open to the public;
