To me, it's just the cinematic equivalent of a bibliography. Just as a
bibliography provides you with all the pertinent publication information
for books/articles on a particular subject, a filmography provides all
the important information on a set of films (usually by the same director
or featuring the same actor). This usually means cast and credits,
production information, release date, technical information, etc.
Nowadays, we also have videographies and other monstrosities.
