Sorry for the self-serving news, but the most recent issue of _Sekai_
(December 1998) has a special feature on nationalism and Kobayashi
Yoshinori, the manga artist (_Gomanizumu sengen_) and screenwriter for _A
Crazy Family_, mostly focusing on why young Japanese are buying his
_Sensoron_, a manga justifying WWII, in droves.

Articles include:

Cho Kyongil on the nationalism of a generation without utopias
Oguma Eiga on contemporary populism that "avoids" the left
Nakanishi Shintaro on Kobayashi as a media icon
Noda Masaaki on the price of "pride" in the "nation"
Aaron Gerow on _Sensoron_ as a manga
Kosuge Nobuko on Kobayashi's propagandistic use of wartime narratives
Corinne Bret on the individual in peacetime

Not much on film there, but the same issue has a piece by Yamaguchi
Takeshi on _Private Ryan_ and the final installment of Yomota Inuhiko's
essays on contemporary Japanese film directors (this issue featuring
Ishii Sogo).
