International film festivals rarely show films without some form of
translation. The form of translation depends upon the prestige, location
and bank accounts of the festival. For example, because of the desires of
filmmakers to distribute in the UK and the US (via film or television)---as
well as more Imperial reasons connected to the circulation of English as a
medium of communication in the film world---most festivals in
English-speaking parts of the world are lucky enough to be able to show
English subtitled films. In Europe I've seen mixed languages, English and
the local one. In Japan, it generally depends on the festival. For example,
at Yamagata where I worked for a while, all screenings offered at least
Japanese and English. If there were no soundtrack or subs for either, they
would be broadcast for listening on borrowed earphones. 

International film festivals are also one of the most exciting parts of our
film culture. Go!
