Actually, it's not all literature: a lot of essays and other forms of
non-fiction writing are on the site. if you look at the list of texts in
progress, we have many of Itami Mansaku's works to look forward to.
Aozora Bunko is taking advantage of Japanese copyright laws which
stipulate that texts are public domain fifty years after the death of the
author (that's why, for instance, they have been putting out a bunch of
Dazai in recent months). Since Itami died in 1946, his writings are all
technically in the public domain.
Since Aozora is run on an all-volunteer basis, however, it does take time
for texts to be typed up, formatted, and put on the web.
Reminds me that we should be as aggressive about film.
