KineJapan ---
The New York Film Festival has announced its schedule.
Two Japanese films will be included, the other Kurosawa's
License to Live on Sunday, 9/26, and Monday, 9/27,
and a special screening of the American release version
(the English language version) of Princess Mononoke,
one screening only in a larger auditorium, on Sunday,
9/26.
In addition to the festival screening of Princess Mononoke,
the Museum of Modern Art will host a festival of
Studio Ghibli films from Sept. 16-26. Titles include
Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind,
Miyazawa's Porco Rosso,
Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies,
Takahata's Only Yesterday,
Miyazaki's Kiki's Deleivery Service (English language),
Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky (Laputa),
Takahata's PomPoko,
Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro,
Kondo's Whisper of the Heart,
and a sepcial preview of a recent, unannounced Ghibli film.
A separate note for US film programmers and those who can
influence them: New Yorker Films recently made a new 35mm
print of Oshima's Cruel Story of Youth.
One further aside, a sad note. I haven't seen it reported here,
but an AP wire story reported the death of acclaimed
cinematographer Miyagawa Kazuo at age 91 in Kyoto on August 7.
My apologies if I missed the posting.
