Battle Hymn of the Republic

I watched "Winds of the Gods" tonight and in at least three scenes you can
hear parts of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (once being played by a
character on harmonica).  I found it a bit tricky to figure out the
intention:  what does this song mean to a Japanese audience (or the
WWII-era characters in the film)?  Is it used solely or primarily as music
with no connotations intended?
