Editor's note: Please reply directly to Mr. Schaefer.
I'm organizing a panel for the AAS 2000 on the cultural reception of
photography/photographs in East Asia from the nineteenth century through
the first half of the twentieth century. How have such images and the
ways in which they are produced been thought about, and how have they
altered the conception, creation, consumption of -- and interrelations
among -- texts and images, literary and visual art, mass and elite
culture? How have the creation, proliferation and circulation of
photographic images informed thinking about urgent issues of gender,
ethnicity, the past, historical & cultural identity in an era of rapidly
globalizing culture?
Proposals are welcome from fields such as anthropology, art history,
history, literature, visual and cultural studies, etc.
If interested in participating, please send me a brief paper description
at <sws2 at midway.uchicago.edu>.
I look forward to hearing from you.
