You'll probably have to get tapes without subtitles from Japan, unless
others know sources. For articles, be sure to check the indexes for at
least Variety. I'm sure that there are reviews out there in English if you
look hard enough in the libraries.
If you can find someone to translate, you would find some invaluable
writing on the subject in philosopher Tsurumi Shunsuke's _Gokai no kenri_
(Right to Misunderstand). This is available in the states from U of
Michigan library, and probably quite a few other libraries. It's one of the
first serious books on popular film in any language, and at least one of
the chapters talks about the fascinating qualities of the postwar war film.
