Cure, etc. + the ring

I have seen _The ring_ in HK 1 month and 1/2 agao now. Surprisingly, there
were no english subtitles. There was so much hype around this film here! It
was hailed as one of the scariest movies here. I guess it topped the foreign
film bnox office for several weeks (ahead of all hollyqood releases)
I did not find it that scary (but perhaps a lot is in the dialogues and my
japanese is non-existent).
They now release the Ring2 (with english subtitles)
There are also VCD releases of _The Ring/the spiral_ and while in Korea I
saw posters for _The Ring/the virus_.

All this starts to be a little bit confusing! Anyone has insights on this
Ring saga and why it became such a huge hit (at least in HK). Didi it do
that well in Japan???

Thanks/ArC
