Fellow KineJapaners,
An American philosopher friend of mine, who is teaching here in Japan, sent me the following
which I would like to share with all of you. I have already fired off a partial response of my
own and would be very curious to see what you might come up with............
....................................................................
I have a request. I need videos to illustrate some lectures in my
hero course here at the University. Can't find anything suitably Greek
and I've begun thinking that Samurai movies might fill the bill.
First, Achilles and Agamemnon. THe text I use is the beginning of
the Iliad, where Achilles is forced to give his war prize to
Agamemnon. The first point here is the divine based hero yielding to
the regime of human kings. The second point is that the Iliad
mainly concerns a conflict in the Greek ranks that needs to be
resolved before they can fight the Trojans. I remember that you said
this was a basic motif in J war films.
Second, Achilles versus Hector. Hector at first runs away and is
chased three times around the walls of Troy to the horror of the
Trojans. Finally, he stops and resolves that it is better to fight
and die like a warrior than die like a coward. Any suggestions.
Third, Oedipus blinding and exiling himself when he discovers that
the ruin of the kingdom is himself. Perhaps, Ran, when the old
Daimyo realizes that he has instigated the conflict among his sons?
Finally, Antigone confronting Creon. That it is better to die and
serve the divine law (burying her brother) than live and obey the
human law (Creon's interdiction against this).
I need 10-15 minute segments for any or all of these. If you think
of something, could you send me the videos with instructions on what
part of the film to look for? Or even better rough edits of
appropriate scenes. Even a title that I could get at the
Hyakumonben store here in Kyoto, with instructions about what part of
the film to check out would be good. I know you are busy and this
is short notice, but any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, what do you people think?
