Hello! My name is Xena Starr. Hajimemashite. Dozo yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
That was the beginning of my basic self-introduction for the two years I was
in Japan. I was working as an assistant English teacher in a small town in
northern Japan. I would often watch Japanese movies on tv, in spite of the
fact that they had no subtitles, and my Japanese language skills are very
basic. I would be fascinated to watch some of them again now, with
subtitles. I suspect it would be like watching completely different films.
In any case, I have loved movies for a long time. I took a few film studies
courses when I was at university in England, although my degree was in
politics and sociology. After that, I came back home to Florida and did
volunteer work at a non-profit cinema for a few years. I also became a
member of the film co-op that developed from it. There I studied super-8
film-making, and helped to organize a few local film festivals. My interest
in film combines a love of beauty and the magic of images with a fascination
for the way in which society or culture is represented. The Japanese sense
of aesthetics and the combination of western and traditional elements in
their culture are some of the reasons I am interested in Japanese films. As
for joining this mailing list, I am curious to learn of films I haven't
heard of and to locate resources for finding films I want to see. That's all
for now.
