The only 'plot' change that I know of is the changing of the relationship
between Ashitaka and the girl in his village who gives him her crystal
dagger before he leaves. AFAIK it was originally a love relationship and
changed in the dub to a brother-sister relationship.
Now about the Pocket Monsters movie and MH promotion...I think we're still
dealing with a general mindset that anime will only appeal to the 'arthouse'
crowd at best in the US. Disney dumped some serious cash, as far as I know,
into their deal with Ghibli and I doubt that they want to tank one film for
the sake of their other movies. They're just unsure exactly how to run with
this and so they're using the same model used for _Shakespeare in Love_,
limited initial release and then wider release if the box office shows
promise. While many anime fans believe that Disney has some secret agenda
against anime; I believe that while Disney probably has real problems with
anime, they're not going to allow that to get in the way of them making
piles of money ^_^
Pocket Monsters on the other hand is quite a different beast from MH; it is
currently the biggest phenomenon in the US with the Game Boy games and kids
getting into all sorts of trouble over the trading card game nationwide. So
you basically have this huge number of just about guaranteed moviegoers
($10mil on a _wednesday_ opening says a whole lot) and a movie that has
nothing really overtly Japanese in it.
