Konnichiwa... Hajimemashite...
I just came back from the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival
where a short experimental documentary video i made with a friend was
presented in the New Asian Currents section. I was told by a fellow
subcriber to the list, Jeffrey Isaacs (hiya!) that i might find the
information i seek on japanese films through the Kinema club. I am feature
film writer from Malaysia about to go independent into feature filmmaking,
albeit focusing more on documentary films at this early stage...
Basically, i am fascinated by how every japanese film seem to be different
from the next one... i mean when i look at films from a particular country,
i always find there's a confluence of directorial styles i could attribute
to the particular country the directors hail from (like the French have a
very distinct style whether in the 60s or today, likewise Hong Kong, India,
Germany, Spain, Russia, China, etc.)... but not so with the japanese films,
i find...
i mean, i see very little coincidence between an Ozu and a Kurosawa, a
Kitano and an Aoyama, a Kawashima and an Obayashi, or a Kawase and a
Tsukamoto... but hey, i've barely read or seen that much of japanese films
-- so, what do i know anyway...?
i just know that i really love Kawashima Yuzo's 'Shitoyakana Kemono'
(Elegant Beast) so much that i've become obsessed in my desire to find
whatever morsel of information i can about the filmmaker, the film, the
script, the actors, the shoot, everything about the film... hence my arrival
here...
those who really know their Anime will also recognised my sign-off and
understand my interest in that area...
