The issue of Kinema Junpo that just hit the news stands (no. 1294)
features the results of their poll of Japanese filmmakers (not critics)
on the best Japanese films of all time. This issue is the second
commemorating their 80th anniversary (the previous issue did the foreign
films).

The results are:

1. Seven Samurai (Kurosawa, 1954)
2. Floating Clouds (Naruse, 1955)
3. Hunger Straits (Uchida, 1964)
4. Tokyo Story (Ozu, 1953)
5. Sun Legend at the End of the Shogunate (Kawashima, 1957)
5. Rashomon (Kurosawa, 1950)
7. Intentions of Murder (Imamura, 1964)
8. Battle Without Honor series (Fukasaku, 1973-74)
9. Twenty-four Eyes (Kinoshita, 1954)
10. Ugetsu (Mizoguchi, 1953)

1. ???? (??, 1954)
2. ?? (??, 1955)
3. ???? (??, 1964)
4. ???? (??, 1953)
5. ????? (??, 1957)
5. ??? (??, 1950)
7. ???? (??, 1964)
8. ??????????? (??, 1973-74)
9. ????? (??, 1954)
10. ???? (??, 1953)

Interesting that Hunger was picked above Tokyo Story and that at least
three choices--Hunger, Sun Legend, and Battle--have barely ever been
shown abroad. Comparing the list with critics' choices is also
interesting. And you can also look up the best ten list of your favorite
filmmaker.
