Gavin is correct in pointing out the contradictions necessitated by
collaborative production, the difficulty for someone like Hara to make the
shift, the contrary pull of the sponsor, and pretty much everything else he
wrote. I must add one more to the list: Hara appears committed to 16mm film
production, yet another thing the Full Shot group criticized him for. Full
Shot's Wu Yii-fung can direct his own incredibly energy and charisma at
supporting and directing his students precisely because they're working in
video. By way of contrast, the enormous budget required by 16mm meant that
Hara could not avoid all the baggage implied by the film's credit line: "A
Cinema Juku + Hara Kazuo Production".
