CALL FOR PAPERS

ASIAN CINEMA IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION AND DEMOCRATIZATION

The 1990s witnessed profound changes in Asian media as national systems
of communication were deregulated and privatized; as these phenomena,
coupled with the proliferation of new information technology, allowed an
onrush of outside media owners and programmers to dominate the Asian
scene; and as national governments began to accept tenets of
"democratization." Cinema, of course, was also profoundly affected by
these same factors. The Asian Cinema Studies Society 2000 conference
hopes to address how deregulation, globalization, and democratization
have changed the ways Asian cinema is conceptualized, produced,
distributed, and exhibited.

Some possible questions to be explored are the following:

Have Asian film industries retained or lost their autonomy in the light
of globalization?

What have been the impacts on local film industries of restrictive U.S.
trade policies, some dealing with culture?

Have Asian film formats, styles, and genres been changed by
globalization?

Have they been further Hollywoodized?

What have been some of the unique ways used by producers and directors to
ensure their autonomy and independence?

Are Asian cinemas freer to tackle political, social, and gender issues
since the advent of "democratization"?

Other topics not directly related to the conference theme, but dealing
with an aspect of Asian cinema, will be considered. Possible topics might
include:

       Transnational Reception
       Asian Diaspora Cinemas
Fissures in Patriarchal Systems as Asian Women Make Movies
International Hybridizations and Their Aesthetic Implications
       Historical Roots of Current Trends.

The ACSS 2000 conference, scheduled for May 19 - 21, 2000, will be
sponsored by the Film and Video Studies Program of the University of
Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. Proposals for panels, workshops, and papers
should be submitted by November 30 (Deadline Extended), 1999, to Dr. John
Lent, 669 Ferne Blvd., Drexel Hill, PA, 19026. Participants will be
notified by December 31, 1999. Abstract proposals should be no longer
than 200 words.
