There's a lot written on Godzilla both in English and Japanese (Toho 
itself has put out many books), so I'll let others give their favorites, 
but I do want to note a special issue of the (now defunct?) Japanese 
journal Pop Culture Critique (issue 3) entitled "Nichibei Gojira taisen." 
 It is full of (sometime interesting, sometimes not) articles on Godzilla 
and the American version, many from a comparative perspective.  The 
journal (or, really, book series) is published by Seikyusha (???) and 
came out in July of last year. The ISBN is 4787270974.
