Zen and 'cultural studies' group-think

I don't feel I can add much to the facts about Zen and Japanese film, but
in discussing it, I wonder how much Japanese film criticism itself
considers matters of religion when discussing certain directors. You would
rarely find an essay on Martin Scorcese, for example, which wouldn't bring
in his Catholicism.

And what would one make of the presentation of heaven in a film like
"Afterlife?" (which, I have to say, is finally coming to Santa Barbara in a
few weeks for one night only. With luck, I'll get to review it.)
