Dear Noriko,
When the issue of securing copyright permission for some scripts I
translated came up during the past year, I was referred to the following:
NIHON KYAKUHONKA RENMEI
Toshikane Building, 4th Floor
6-5-17 Roppongi
Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0032
FAX: +3-3401-7255
The individual who answered my fax and who apparently is in the copyright
dept of NKR was Mr. YOSHINO Takashi. The reply I received was sent from an
email address, "sgj at tky.3web.ne.jp" but it might be better to fax so you
have a paper trail. Their answer to me was that neither they nor the other
source I was told to contact, the NIHON SHINARIO SAKKA KYOKAI, handled the
rights in question, but it is worth checking with both these official
organizations.
NIHON SHINARIO SAKKA KYOKAI
5-4-16 Akasaka
Minato-ku, Tokyo 107-0052
FAX: +3-3584-1902
In general, I have been told that the economic rights of screenwriters
continues up to fifty years following her/his death, and supposedly these
two above organizations are the places to contact to obtain the necessary
copyright clearance. In reality, neither place could help me, as I
mentioned, but the scripts in question dated from the 1910s and 1920s. A
situation involving Kurosawa might be more straightforward. It may also be
that a publisher holds the rights as your Japanese source says, I honestly
don't know--I think it can be confusing for all involved if there are no
clear-cut antecedents. Good luck, I hope this helps.
