The best source references for this subject that I know are :
Phil Hardy's 'Aurum Encyclopedia of Horror' (for pre-95 stuff, this will put
everything into a more global perspective)
Thomas Weisser's 'Essential Guide to Japanese Cinema' and its related
publications (Comprehensive but not particularly well written head in the
trough fan guide).
As for the films, some significant titles are:
Kwaidan (Masaki Kobayashi, 1964)
Onibaba (Kaneto Shindo 1965)
Joys of Torture (Teruo Ishii, 1965)
Violated Angels (Koji Wakamatsu, 1967)
Jigokuhen (Shiro Toyoda, 1969)
Blind Womans Curse (Teruo Ishii, 1970)
Lake of Dracula (Michio Yamamoto, 1971)
Evil of Dracula (Michio Yamamoto, 1974)
(I'm not making any comment on the quality of these films - just that they
are significant! Check the imdb for more information)
Then there's the splatter titles you mentioned - Organ, Evil Dead Trap,
Guinea Pig.
And finally the recent horror revival spurred off by 'The Ring' (Ringu) and
its sequel (Hideo Nakata, 1998)
Hope this helps. I'd be very interested to see your paper when you're
finished with it.
