Dear KineJapan members,
Apropos of the recent call for list-lurkers to step forward and
identify themselves, let me offer the following:
I am a visiting assistant prof. in the Japanese Department at
Middlebury College. My dissertation (Stanford 1999) Avant-garde Literature
and the New City: Tokyo 1923-1931 examines the simultaneous development of
modernist literature a new conception of 'mass culture' in interwar Japan. I
am particularly interested in how changes in the publishing industry, the
ascendance of film, and the birth of new media such as radio stimulated
writers to reimagine the boundaries of 'literature.' I hope to pursue the
problematic of 'literature' and 'media' further in the future, and I would
be delighted to hear from anyone who has thoughts on this subject.
Incidentally, some members of the list might be interested in a
class I recently devised entitled Japanese Visual Culture. The course's
website features an annotated bibliography with over 170 entries (both
publications and web links) and over 100 student annotations. It is divided
into the subjects 1)introduction 2)Edo visuality & the 'floating world'
3)prewar film and photography 4)postwar art and culture (including links to
contemporary art sites) and 5)manga and anime. The 'film' section is still
rather scanty, but I invite anyone interested to consult the bibliography
and offer further suggestions. The website's URL is

Regards,
William Gardner
