Some of you might know Yasui Yoshio as the head of the Planet Biblioteque
du Cinema in Osaka (as well as as a writer, film festival coordinator,
and film collector), but Planet has recently put out ain important video
series called "Maboroshi no katsudo daishashin" of very rare prewar
Japanese films on video based on the films Yasui-san has managed to find.
Especially since few prewar films end up on video (especially silent and
animated ones), the series is a must see for anyone interested in prewar
film, jidaigeki, or animation.
The series of six videos includes 13 films, including _Edo kaizokuden
Kageboshi_ (1925; Dir: Futagawa Buntaro; Starring: Bando Tsumasaburo);
_Sakamoto Ryoma_ (1928; Dir: Edamasa Yoshiro; Starring: Bando
Tsumasaburo); _Shonen bidan_ (1928; Dir: Uchida Tomu; an educational
film); _Yami no tejina_ (1927; Dir: Suzuki Jukichi; another educational
film); _Ninjutsu senichiya_ (1939; Dir: Otomo Ryuzo; Starring: Konoe
Jushiro); and rare early animated films by masters like Masaoka Kenzo and
Ofuji Noburo.
I haven't confirmed this yet, but it seems that some of the films are
Pathe Baby versions (condensed for 9.5 mm home use). Some also include a
benshi soundtrack.
The price is 8000 yen per video (20000 per video for libraries). For
more information, contact Planet (tel: 06-6364-2165; fax: 06-6312-8232);
or Iwanami Eizo Hanbai (tel: 03-5689-2601; 03-5689-2385).
