I think this is very good news. It seems to me one of the biggest problems
with developing an interesting film studies scene in Japan are the senior
scholars. They don't seem to talk to each other, and I rarely see them
attending the film events in Tokyo unless they're specifically invited.
There's no peer review, open job search competitions, no reason to talk to
each other I guess. I've long thought it would be interesting to get all the
graduate students together and see what happens, and a few of us have toyed
with the idea of Kinema Club sponsoring the kind of event Peter is planning.
The difference would be that we imagined something thoroughly international.
There are an amazing number of foreign graduate students looking at Japanese
film right now, and many of them are writing dissertations in Japan. I hope
y'all make an effort to attend....next time around a bit more warning would
be nice!
By the way, next week is the main conference for image studies in Japan; I
won't be able to go, but I hope someone can report on what happens. Aaron?
Mikiro?
Markus
PS: Peter, in the future tell me if there's anything I can do to help...
