New After Life DVD (and Ozu Video question)

I just got the new US DVD of After Life --and encountered a mystery.  The
package claims the release is letterboxed, but the actual movie plays (on my DVD
player) only in full screen mode.  A couple of the trailers included on the DVD
do play in widescreen mode, however. An inquiry to New Yorker Video has yielded
no response yet. Has anyone else had any experience with this DVD yet?

Another formatting question, while I'm at it.  The recent New Yorker Video of
Ozu's I Was Born But has lots of cut off heads (at the top of the screen).  I
thought Ozu was more meticulous about framing.  Has this video release done
something weird to the source material?  Has anyone else I Was Born But in
another release (and remember what the framing was like)?
