I went to a preview of the film, having been invited by the cinematographer
Tamura Masaki. Unfortunately, he gave me a starting time that was half and
hour late, so I missed crucial early scenes that resonate through the rest
of the work. Despite this, I really liked the film. I have to admit that
I'm partial to the long form and to Aoyama (who sez Aoyama has a poor rep
in Japan?!?!?), but at the same time I am weary of the slow-paced,
angst-ridden, "beach films" that have dominated the 1990s. Aoyama's road
film was powerful, particularly for the characters determined to reach for
each other. The photography was the best Tamura's ever done to boot.
