I think the colloquium held at UCB turned out successful, in many aspects.
For one thing, the variety of the topics, though at the first sight
confusing, offered a balanced intersection between the past and the
present, classical and the contemporary. Another inspiring aspect was a nice
opportunity for people of the two cultures to allow a face-to-face
clarification of their questions and ambiquities concerning the current
women directors intentions and backstories of their filmmaking. The UCB
staff and especially Chris did a beautiful job to make the visitors' stay
easy, whether it rains, or snows. Lastly, let me make a brief report of my
presentation, "The Indemnity Mrs. Mimasu pleaded: A Merging of the Image and
the Real." I have been researching women's film the past ten years, for I
have grown up watching her films through the 50s. and undeniably have some
part of myself tinged by their colors and scents. Mimasu is my second
mother. in a sense. However I have realized the representation of a mother
has not really presented an affirmative affect upon my relation with my own
parent.. Thus I am trying to integrate my own ideas with the cinematographic
images of Japanese women's films through feminist theories. In my paper I
addressed a media's reaction to Mimasu's persona and image. I want to find
out if there is any group which studies women's films, with a focus on
mothers.
