Dear Aaron,
Thanks for your reply.  After I wrote you, I felt uneasy about not knowing 
such a probably obvious thing.  But maybe I will learn, and will have more 
depth to my questions and comments in future.   I am going to order some of 
Kirosawa's films on tape--some that I haven't seen before, and I will never 
miss an opportunity to see a Japanese classic again!  I am amazed at the 
range of emotions these films convey.  I grew up during WWII, when the 
Japanese were so reviled in this country, and I am learning about the 
sensitivity and expressiveness evidenced in this form of Japanese art.
