He is in fact a major contributor to expanding the fame of japanese cinema.

If anyone speaks french (you never know!), he published an beautifully 
illustrated book 10 years ago that is still available:

As far as i know, he still writes as a critic.

Another important essay on japanese cinema was published during the 80's by 
Gallimard/Cahier du Cin?ma. The author is No?l Burch.
