Several weeks ago I went to see Distance in Shibuya.  I enjoyed the film, 
and the ending still has me wondering about things.  The pamphlet is also 
very nice and I enjoyed reading the interviews.  I have two complaints 
though: the shaky camera gave me a bit of a headache, and the inside of 
Cinema Rise is built like a mausoleum.  I can't imagine being stuck 
underground, lined up on those concrete stairs during the hot, muggy summer.

So the movie will be shown with subtitles later this month...  That reminds 
me of something.  When my showing was let out, I walked out to the lobby and 
was surprised to find the director Koreeda autographing pamphlets.  I 
thought what the heck, so I bought a pamphlet and got in line.  When Mr. 
Koreeda started signing my book I told him that I enjoyed the film.  He 
paused for a second, looked me over and then asked, "Were you able to 
understand the words?"  (This was all in Japanese, of course.)  I was taken 
off guard a little by the question, which struck me as kind of silly, but I 
managed to respond, "more or less."  I thanked him, shook his hand and then 
left.

On another topic, I just got back from vacation in Seattle.  I avoided the 
baseball hubbub and tried to hit some of the early summer blockbusters 
instead.  I wasn't too impressed.  So what is the Japanese summer film 
line-up looking like this year?
