You might want to check out Kumai Kei's SANDAKAN No. 8 (1974, Sandakan
hachiban shokan bokyo, ????????????). Also, the 1972 book on
which the movie is based is also now available in English: Yamazaki, Tomoko,
_Sandakan Brothel no. 8: a journey into the history of lower-class Japanese
women_. M.E. Sharpe: Armonk, NY 1999. See also "Sandakan No. 8 Brothel,"
Yamazaki Tomoko, in "Bulletin of Concerned Asian Scholars," Oct-Dec 1975,
pp. 52-60.
There is also an issue of _Positions_ that might be useful to you, vol. 5
no. 1 (Spring 1997, special issue: the comfort women: colonialism, war, and
sex). 

SANDAKAN No. 8 is commercially available on video subtitled in English.
Another film that at least used to be available commercially (unsubbed) in
Japan is Taniguchi Senkichi's ESCAPE AT DAWN (Akatsuki no dasso, ????,
script by Kurosawa Akira) that might also be of interest to you--I think it
is 1951 or 1952 or thereabouts.

Subject: Comfort Girls


Hi fellow KineJapanners,

I'm planning an article on the subject of "comfort girls" in Japanese
cinema, and desperately looking to get hold of some of Imamura's
documentaries on the subject. Does anyone know where I can get access on VHS
to his KARAYUKI-SAN, THE MAKING OF A PROSTITUTE (Karayuki-san, 1975), in any
form of European subtitled language, and also any suggestions for further
films along this line of research outside of Imamura's work. Suzuki's STORY
OF A PROSTITUTE (SHUPUNDEN, 1965) is one film that springs to mind, and
Masumura's RED ANGEL (Akai Tenshi, 1965), but there must be plenty more out
there. Any help in getting hold of these titles would also be gratefully
accepted. Getting hold of rare films has got rather more complicated since
moving back to Britain from Holland.
