Japanese pop culture

I am a university student currently studying Japanese pop culture in America with a focus on the television show Iron Chef.  I realize this topic may seem "unacademic", nonetheless, if you have any comments, I would be interested in hearing them.  I am most interested in the television show and its incredible popularity in the United States.  Specifically, why the Iron Chef and not other television imports?  Also, I am interested in what Japanese people think of the show.  Again, any comments are greatly appreciated.  Thank you.
