horrifying act in NYC

Well, there are likely some Pearl Harbor parallels, and I imagine none of us
would be surprised if more develop when the guilty party is eventually
identified.

Ever read John W. Dower's book "War Without Mercy"? Americans are quite
capable of overwhelming collective anger and a lust for revenge when
something like this happens. Whoever did this is not exactly the kind of
enemy that the Japanese were, but we'll hate them just as much, and you can
expect calls for their extermination. I'm not old enough to remember Pearl
Harbor, but there are a lot of people I know who are and have never forgiven
the Japanese. I do remember when the Iranians invaded our Tehran embassy and
took hostages, and the last thing then I wanted to be was an
Iranian-American. That was nothing compared to this. I wouldn't want to be a
Palestinian-American right now for anything in the world.

I had a student in my class this morning who was in tears. When I tried to
comfort her she told me her father worked in the World Trade Center. I sent
her home.
